Rope 102: We’ve Had One, Yes, But What About Second Band?

Cool, you’ve got a single column tie you like! Now what? Perhaps you want to build harness structures that hold up under stress, but you’re finding that memorizing entire patterns is just not working for your brain yet. Not to worry! We’ll break down the pros, cons, and “why” of three ways to continue your harness so you can pick what works for you. For rope tops, exposure to these techniques (reverse tension and half hitch, x friction, reverse somerville bowline) can help you learn complex patterns through identifying the simpler building blocks, but it can also increase your comfort with improvising entirely. For bottoms, understanding these ideas can help you assess your preferences (e.g. T or V shapes) and the integrity of the rope you’re in. This 102-level class is perfect for anybody who can tie a single column and connect rope but would benefit from zooming in on the next step. Please bring a cutting tool and at least two hanks of rope (limited extras will be available). Students can bring but do not need a partner.
