Kink & Culture: BIPOC Perspectives in BDSM

Non-BIPOC participants are welcome. BIPOC participants are centered. Kink & Culture is a BIPOC-centered exploration of power, play, and possibility through the lens of culture and identity. This session unpacks how mainstream kink history has erased or exoticized BIPOC traditions, the barriers BIPOC kinksters still face in white-centered spaces, and the invisible tax that comes with code-switching, tokenism, and cultural invisibility. Drawing on research including Erickson et al. (2022), we examine how intersectionality shapes safety, perception, and power in scenes, and what it actually takes to create spaces that feel genuinely affirming. BIPOC participants will leave with concrete tools for vetting spaces, protecting themselves in play, and building long-term community power. Non-BIPOC participants are invited to learn in humility and leave with specific, research-grounded actions they can take. We highlight affinity spaces, community-led organizations, and culturally informed consent practices as models for building belonging. At its core, this session is about reclaiming ancestral roots, naming systemic barriers, and imagining liberatory kink futures where everyone can play, heal, and thrive.
