Fun with Frictions
Learn and explore different types of rope frictions and creative variations of pattern and design for tying people in rope. These ties can be customized to bodies of any size, shape, and identity. Participants will learn some frequently used directional frictions (including reverse tension, half hitch, munter hitch, round turn) and their functions in rope bondage, and apply them to create lower body ties for functional and aesthetic purposes. We’ll cover a spiral futomomo (bent-leg tie) with several variations. We’ll then do a lower-body “mermaid” tie (with both legs together), showing ways to apply frictions and tension to create aesthetic designs. (Note: The harnesses taught in this class are not intended for suspension.) Prerequisites: People tying should know a single-column tie, such as the Somerville bowline single-column tie. All participants, but especially people being tied, should have body awareness and be able to communicate their needs and limitations to their tying partner. Tying pairs and self-tying in the workshop are both welcome. Observers are also welcome. Bring at least 3-4 ropes
